Home favourite Carolina Kluft successfully defended her heptathlon crown with a dominant display as Kelly Sotherton's medal bid came undone in the javelin.
Olympic and world champion Kluft set a championship record of 6740 points to crush the opposition as Karin Ruckstuhl of Holland took silver with 6423 points and Lilli Schwarzkopf of Germany took bronze with 6420 points. Sotherton finished in seventh with 6290 after throwing just 30.05m in the competition. Jessica Ennis took eighth place with 6287 points. Ennis's total was a personal best of 6287 while Louise Hazel also set a lifetime best of 5894 points.
Olympic silver medallist Francis Obikwelu showed his class to win the 100m title. After a weak start Obikwelu's pick up saw him surge to the front and he was a clear winner in 9.99sec. Russian Andrey Yepishin was second in 10.10sec with Slovenia's Matic Osovnikar taking bronze with 10.14sec. Mark-Lewis Francis could only manage fifth (10.16sec) while Dwain Chambers came in seventh with 10.24sec.
Greg Rutherford leapt from bronze to silver medal position in his last jump of the championship as Britain took its first medal. His 8.13m jump was just one centimetre ahead of bronze. Chris Tomlinson and Nathan Morgan jumped 7.74m and 7.65m respectively and failed to make the cut.
Tim Benjamin held on to the fourth qualifying spot from his semi-final with 45.67sec. After an injury disrupted season Benjamin will struggle to make the impression in the final he would have hoped for 12 months ago. David Gillick went out after finishing 7th in his semi-final with 46.84sec.
Natasha Danvers-Smith qualified for the 400m hurdles final with third place in her semi-final. Lee McConnell failed to nail the final hurdle in her semi-final and went out after finishing fifth with in 55.61sec.
Becky Lyne cruised into the 800m final by taking second behind Russian Svetlana Klyuka. Lyne charged down the home straight to clock one minute, 59.11 seconds. Jemma Simpson finished in sixth place in her race and failed to reach the final. Having won her appeal after being felled in her heat Amanda Pritchard was unable to line up for the semis as she had suffered an injury.
Germany's Jan Fitschen wa a surprise winner of the 10K. Defending champion Jose Martinez took silver with another Spaniard, Juan Carlos de la Ossa, in third. On his senior international debut Martin Fagan finished in 11th place with 28min 54.04sec. Fagan will also run the 5,000m alongside Alistair Cragg and Britain's Mo Farah.
