Mo Farah has gone second on the UK all-time 5000m rankings after a great run in Heusden, Belgium, on Saturday 22 July.
Farah lowered his best to 13min 09.40sec - a time that is second only to Dave Moorcroft’s national record set when he ran the then world record of 13:00.41 in Oslo on 7th July 1982.
His places his second on the European rankings for the season behind Ireland’s Alistair Cragg. Cragg ran 13min 08.97sec in the Reebok Grand Prix in New York on 3rd June.
Mo followed the early pace, and passed 3K in under 8min – about 25m down on the leader. He closed down the leaders and made an attack with 600m to go only to see a group of Africans pull away in the last half lap as he came in sixth.
Farah is keen to not over hype his chances in the European Championships but his performance has seen him move up a class and will boost his confidence.
Farah has been based in Teddington and putting in a lot of work with Australian distance star Craig Mottram.
At the same meeting Jemma Simpson went under 2min for 800m with 1min 59.99sec as she finished runner-up to Morocco’s Mina Ait-Hammou. Tim Benjamin clocked 45.61sec for 400m to go second on the 2006 UK rankings.
