The men’s AAAs 5K turned into a race long battle while the women’s event was settled by a bold display of front running when the titles were decided at the Asda Horwich 5K Road Championships.
After the initial charge the lead pack turned into Telford’ Chris Davies and Leigh Harrier’s Peter Riley running with the Birchfield Harriers duo of Tewodros Shiferaw and Patrick Makau.
As the pace took it’s toll it was Riley who was first to drop off the lead group leaving the runners to battle it out. The push for the line saw Shiferaw come home in 13min 54sec while Makau and Davies both hit the line in 13min 56sec. It was Makau who was given the nod for second place but Davies’ run saw him claim the AAAs title. Riley came home in 14min 01sec.
The team competition was won by Belgrave Harriers with Mark Miles, Simon Jones and Richard Ward.
The women’s 5K title was won with a bold display of front running. Bristol & West’s Kate Reed went to the front from the gun and set about shattering the previous record of 16min 05sec. She came home in 15min 45sec – the fastest on the roads by a British woman this year.
Cathy Mutwa of Birchfield also came in faster than the previous record with 16min 02sec while third place went to Kate Ramsay of Charnwood AC with 16min 14sec.
Telford’s Claire Martin, Sian Dixon and Kim Green took the team title.
