Ethiopian capital city Addis Ababa is gearing up for the TOYOTA Great Ethiopian Run. The sixth running of the major 10K event will take place on Sunday 26th November.
The event is growing in reputation and among the VIPs heading for the event are Swedish Olympic heptathlon champion Carolina Kluft, Moroccan Olympic 1500m/5K champion Hicham El Guerrouj and Ireland’s 2000 Olympic 5,000m silver medallist Sonia O’Sullivan.
A strong Kenyan contingent of athletes is also heading over to line up at the event. This group includes former New York and Boston marathon champion Rodgers Rop. 2005 race runner-up Nathan Naibei will be lining up again alongside the 25,000 participants who have registered for the race. A further 3,000 have registered for the Children’s Races on the Saturday. Among the participants in the 10K are fourteen foreign ambassadors currently serving in Addis Ababa.
The race will see other events going on around it including an exhibition of photographs by Jiro Mochizuki of Haile Gebrselassie’s races over the past 15 years. Gebrselassie, the race director for the event and the winner of the inaugural race in 2001, will also host a banquet at his residence for 150 guests after the race.
