Gebrselassie cautious over 26.2M

Haile Gebrselassie is playing down hype surrounding his appearance at the Berlin Marathon on 24th September.

Many have expected Gebrselassie to challenge for the world record over the marathon since he announced he was to debut at London in 2002. In that race he faded slightly in the later stages as Khalid Khannouchi beat Paul Tergat and the world record fell.
Berlin will be Gebrselassie’s fourth race at marathon. It is the venue where Paul Tergat recorded his world record three years ago.

Gebrselassie has said he will run as fast as he could but would not be drawn into time predictions. Although he did say he now feels he will benefit from being more familiar at the distance. Tergat has also said it took him time to adapt to training for and racing over the marathon distance.
