Line up for Great North's 3K event hots up

Olympic 5K champion Meseret Defar has joined the list of big names who will be lining up for the Great North 3000m road race.

The 3K race on 30th September is part of the build up programme for the BUPA Great North Run the following day.

Last year's winner Dorcus Inzikuru will defend her title over a course which covers both sides of the River Tyne around the Newcastle and Gateshead quaysides.

The 24-year-old Ugandan is the country’s first-ever world and Commonwealth champion after her steeplechase victories in Helsinki and Melbourne this year.

Joining the Africans will be world indoor 3K record holder Liliya Shobukhova and Wioletta Janowska who is fastest in the world over 3000m steeplechase this season.

Defar will start as the favourite having clocked world records on the track and road for 5K with 14min 24.53sec and 14min 46sec.

The race programme on the Saturday will also include the men's and women's mile races, a men's 3000m event and the Tesco Junior Great North Run.
