Martyn Rooney had been hoping for a gold in the 400m. But after being in gold medal position coming into the home straight he saw Trinidad’s Renny Quow and Justin Oliver of the US go past to take gold and silver in 45.74sec and 45.78sec. Rooney was left to dig in and hold on to bronze in 45.87sec.
Alex Nelson of City Of Stoke looked to have come away form the 200m without a medal after crossing the line in fourth place in 21.14sec. However when the officials ruled that Ukrainian Dmytro Ostrovsky had stepped out of his lane he had his gold medal position taken away. Nelson was on to the podium. Rion Pierre of Windsor Slough Eton and Hounslow went out after running 21.54 in his semi-final.
The British team of Rion Pierre (Windsor Slough Eton & Hounslow), Alex Nelson (City of Stoke), Wade Bennett Jackson (Belgrave) and Harry Aikines Aryeetey (Sutton and District) came home with bronze medals from the 4 x 100m after a performance of 39.24sec. Jamaica showed their continued sprinting strength with a win in 39.05sec with the USA only 0.03sec ahead of Britain in 39.21sec.
In the 4x400m relay there was another medal for the British men. After strong opening legs from Chris Clarke of Milton Keynes and Grant Baker of Leicester Coritanians Britain were still well down when Kris Robertson of Kirkintilloch handed to individual medallist Rooney. But Rooney moved through from the back and into medal contention. On the line Britain took bronze from Kenya by 0.05sec in 3min 5.49sec.
In other results Zara Hohn ran 13.62sec for fifth in the 100m hurdles final. The British women’s 4 x 100m team of Elaine O Neill (Wessex and Bath), Hayley Jones (Wigan and District), Lucy Sargent (Havering Mayesbrook) and Asha Philip (Newham & Essex Beagles) came home sixth in the final with 44.74sec.
Gianni Frankis of Basildon AC looked a contender for an unexpected medal after three hurdles of the 110m race. However clipping the fourth barrier cost him momentum and saw him slide to seventh in 13.71sec. Julian Adeniran of Charnwood was disappointed not to make the final after clocking 14.01sec for fifth place in his semi final.
Stephanie Twell of Aldershot Farnham & District ran well but came away with eighth place in a tough 1500m race. As the African charge took off down the back straight for the last time Twell was among those battling for the lower places. Hannah England of Oxford City had been eliminated in the heats after seventh place in a tough heat with 4min 23.49sec.
Perri Shakes Drayton of Victoria Park and Tower Hamlets had set PBs as she went through the rounds of the 400m hurdles but found the final a leap too far. She came in eighth in 59.37sec. Ruth Senior of the City of Norwich club came in ninth in the women’s steeplechase. She has made vast improvements this year, came within a second of her PB (set in qualifying) with 10min 13.58sec and even hit the front of the final to put an end to the early crawl with the associated pushing and shoving.
