European Championships - Day Five

Derval O’Rourke has set a new Irish national record on the way to silver in the 100m hurdles. After a strong start Derval looked a possible gold medallist but she was caught by Suzanna Kallur. At the line O'Rourke dipped for silver - in the tightest of finishes the medal was shared with Germany’s Kirsten Bolm. Her time of 12.72sec is 0.24sec faster than her best coming into this season.

Sara McGreavy went out in the 100m hurdle semi-finals after finishing eighth in 13.67sec.

Sam Ellis and Michael Rimmer both made the finals of the men’s 800m. Ellis progressed automatically with third place in his heat, having held third he had to respond when threatened over the last 200m but was equal to the task. Michael Rimmer ran aggressively and although he was caught for pace in the final stages progressed as a fastest loser (1min 47.82sec).

Helen Clitheroe went through to the women’s 1500m final as a fastest loser but Lisa Dobriskey did not make it after finishing seventh in 4min 09.47sec. Clitheror progressed as a fastest loser thanks to her 4min 7.28sec clocking. Aoife Byrne came in 14th in her 1500m semi-final in 4min 16.07sec.

In the 110m hurdles Andy Turner and David Hughes both went into the semi-finals. Turner won his heat in 13.52sec, Hughes moved through as fastest loser after running 13.66sec for third in his heat. William Sharman came fourth in his heat in 13.85sec and was eliminated.

In the long jump Jade Johnson was stretchered away before taking a competitive jump after injuring her knee in her warm-up. Kelly Sotherton went out after jumping 6.40m.
