AUSTRALIAN distance running legend Craig Mottram will be looking for another record breaking run when he toes the line at the Norwich Union British Grand Prix.
The last time the event was held at Don Valley in 2005, the 26-year-old broke the national two-mile record before going on to become the first non-African athlete to medal in the 5000m at the World Championships in Helsinki.
This year Mottram is targeting the more standard distance of 3K for a record as he looked to build up towards the World Championships.
The road to Japan begins with the Norwich Union British Grand Prix on July 15, at the distance he beat the accomplished Ethiopian Kenenisa Bekele at to retain his World Cup title in Athens last year.
“I love racing in Britain and can’t wait to return to Sheffield as I have fond memories of breaking that record two years ago,” he said.
“My football team, Sunderland, enjoyed two wins over Sheffield Wednesday on their way to promotion last season and so I’m hoping that I can do my own double when I return with another victory!
“I had some decent runs in New York last month, but my main goal is in Osaka later this summer so I’m just building up to that.
“Of course it is nice to beat your rivals in races now because it lays down a marker for the major championships, but at the moment my main concern is racing well and for myself.
“Training could not be going any better and now I can’t wait for the Norwich Union British Grand Prix where I look forward to a noisy Sheffield crowd.”
