Jo Pavey is to return to top level action at the Great South Run in Portsmouth. On 22nd October Pavey collapsed and needed medical attention after finishing the BUPA Great North Run. But the Commonwealth Games 5000 metres silver medallist, is out to show she is fully recovered and ready for action by taking on former world 10000m champion Sally Barsosio of Kenya over the 10M at Portsmouth.
"I ran over 10K last weekend and felt perfectly alright although I would have liked to have got a faster time," said Pavey winner of Nike's Run London meeting in Hyde Park.
She added: "Obviously that was a shorter race, and after what happened in the Great North Run it was always my plan to get in another long distance road race.
"Portsmouth fits in perfectly with doing that and my preparations have gone very well."
After the scare at the Great North Run Pavey had tests done which showed she had a blood/sugar deficiency and the results of the tests have allowed her to address the problem. She said: "I had the problem a few years ago at the 2002 Commonwealth Games and never thought there would be a re-occurrence.
"But that's what happened and just as I was making my final effort with 800m to go, everything went blank and I thought I wasn't going to finish.
"I was enjoying until then what is such a great event, but instead of celebrating at the finish, I ended up in the medical tent for an hour.
"However I have maintained my fitness and yesterday did a 17 miles training run. Now I just want to get out there and show I can produce a good 10-miler."
The men's race will see Jon Brown carry British hopes against Spain's European 10000m silver medallist Jose Manuel Martinez and Mark Carroll of Ireland.
