Music - for better training and better life

The benefits of music are well known among runners and gym go-ers.

But more and more is being discovered about the benefits of music.

Reports have now linked music to:

  • More effective exercise
  • Better eating
  • Improved ability to cope with pain
  • Better ability to perform stressful tasks
  • Reduced aggression

One piece of research has been reported as finding that listening to classical music has big benefits on relieving pain – it can reduce chronic pain by up to 21 per cent and alleviate depression by up to 25 per cent.

The director of one US hospital’s coronary care unit once said half an hour of classical music produces the same effect as 10 milligrammes of Valium. Singing has been shown to increase the quality of life of people with progressive dementia.

Doctors do not fully understand how exactly music works but it is not just about distracting people from the pain they are feeling. It has been found in some studies that music can lower blood pressure and respiration rates. Others suggest it can increase the release of the bodies natural pain killers - endorphins – which can also lead to a natural high.

If you want to lose weight choosing the right music for mealtimes is a step in the right direction. Classical or soothing music makes you eat more slowly, chew more and eat less. Whereas faster more stimulating music makes you eat more quickly and therefore you eat more.

So get your playlist in order and watch the health benefits come flowing!
