Tergat pulls out of Great North Run amid talk of retirement

Paul Tergat has withdrawn the Great North Run.

The marathon world record holder said his recent training had gone poorly and comes amid speculation that Kenyan great is considering retirement.

Last week Tergat spoke at an athletes workshop in Nairobi and said: "They say life begins at 40, but in athletics, that is when life ends. I am approaching there and may soon be out of action.”

Tergat was scheduled to face the reigning Olympic and world marathon champions Stefano Baldini and Jaouad Gharib from Morocco.

"We respect his wishes for not wanting to race when not fully prepared," said Matthew Turnbull, Elite Athletes Director of the Great North Run.
