Sir Clive Woodward is to be the new Director of Elite Performance at the British Olympic Association (BOA).
The former rugby coach who led the England team to the 2003 World Cup title in Australia will take up the reins on September 17th.
Sir Clive’s role will cover both the Olympic and Olympic Winter Games. He will provide support and services to the 35 Olympic Sports, be responsible for Team GB’s pre-Beijing Preparation Camp and act as Deputy Chef de Mission (Performance) at the Beijing, Vancouver (winter) and London Olympic Games.
Sir Clive said: “It is a privilege to be joining the BOA at such an exciting time for British Olympic Sport. I will use my past experiences in high performance sport to assist the 35 Olympic Sports achieve their own aspirations, and working in partnership with UK Sport, national governing bodies and Performance Directors to ensure the performance of Team GB is maximised in the years ahead. The prospect of working together with our elite coaches and athletes is tremendously exciting for me.”
BOA Chief Executive Simon Clegg said: “Since before the success of the London 2012 Bid I have been in discussion with Clive about his possible involvement in the development of Team GB. Clive will be a huge asset to the organisation, he will challenge our perspective and his expertise and motivational qualities will ensure our athletes within Team GB can achieve their very best performances.”
Sir Steve Redgrave, 5 times Olympic Gold Medallist and Vice-President of the BOA said: “Every Olympic athlete understands the need for world-class coaching and technical assistance right through the Olympic four-year cycle. If there is one person who knows how to get the best out of elite athletes/sportspeople it is Sir Clive. I have no doubt that his influence working at the BOA will help Team GB achieve its very best potential in the Olympic Games ahead.”
