Ethiopia’s Berhane Adere took first place at the Hydro Active Women’s Challenge in London ahead of Britain’s Jo Pavey.
Adere is a former 10K world champion well known for her finishing speed and she managed to kick away from the lead group over the last quarter mile.
But as Adere crossed the line in 15min 24sec Jo Pavey who had recently gone second on Britain’s all time list over 5K moved up into second with 15min 26sec ahead of Boston Marathon champion Rita Jeptoo of Kenya (15min 27sec).
Pavey had attacked just after 4K which was passed in 12min 34sec before Benita Johnson launched her bid for victory. But as Adere kicked it was Pavey who was best able to respond. Pavey now moves on to the Great North Run.
Paula Radcliffe ran round in 18min 51sec after acting as starter – not bad for someone who is five months pregnant! Radcliffe was running with a heart rate monitor to ensure she did not over do it as she joined the 20,000 runners.
