Women's special - Make the most of your legs - Introduction

Page 2: Give your legs the 'wow' factor - Exercise tips Part 1

Exercise
Let’s start with some golden rules that will apply whatever the areas of your body you are looking to improve:

1 Don’t try to fat target
As you exercise your body burns calories. These calories come from energy reserves held in the form of sugar (glycogen) and fats. Doing lots of exercise on one part of your body WILL NOT shift fat from that area alone. Your body will take the fat from wherever it chooses. This makes overall calories burned an important factor in toning up any part of your body.

A related mistake is to get hung up on the so called ‘fat-burning zone’ of low intensity exercise. Forget it. Working hard burns more calories – you get slimmer. However, if you exercise too hard you limit the amount you can do and therefore the amount of calories you burn. This will show in the way we advise you to exercise.

2 Tone up without bulking up
While you can not magically shift fat from the areas that you choose by focussing exercise on them you can benefit from exercises designed to target these areas. Improving the muscle tone and definition will make you look slimmer. It will give you curves where curves belong, and flat bits where flat bits belong!

Many women panic about bulking up if they so much as pick up a heavy book. This is an unfounded fear. Strength training, resistance training or weight training will not lead to you looking like a Russian shot putter. It will tone your body. It will burn calories as you exercise and lead to a sustained raising of your metabolism - burning yet more calories. Strength training will also give you a leaner body. As muscle weighs far more than fat you should not panic too if the scales do not show weight loss at the rate you might expect.

3 Improve posture
How you carry yourself is a major part of looking good. We will address this.

A balanced and toned body will make maximum of every good feature you have and diminish the negative impact of other features. For example many women have a weak back and poor posture. Their belly sags forwards making it look far bigger and flabbier than it really is!

Let’s make the most of all you have!
