Many beginners who are taking up running think that ‘proper training’ is not for them.
Unfortunately this is often down to people thinking ‘proper training’ means ‘stupidly hard training’. In reality everyone, whether they are a beginner running their first lap of the block or an international athlete, can and should train ‘properly’. ‘Hard, hard, hard’ is not the route to success.
In fact while many beginners shy away from a training program or proper training they actually end up struggling because they try too much too soon or train in an inappropriate way. They often end up demoralised, discouraged, sore, injured or ill!
Other beginners suffer because of bad advice or training, or coaching that doesn’t take into account their current level of fitness or other commitments. Beginners should not be thrown in at the deep end.
When Sonia O’Sullivan and Sports Fitness teamed up to produce our online coaching we knew we had to make sure we could create beginner running schedules every bit as good as our advanced training programmes. We needed to be able to devise training schedules to suit a beginner’s needs.
Whether you are looking for a 5K running schedule, a marathon running schedule or just some fitness advice on how best to use running to tone up we can help you reach your goal. As much thought has to go into beginners marathon training as goes into elite runners training or our training to help you tone up.
We ask questions that allow us to evaluate your current level of fitness and training. We ask which days you are able to train on. Just as any good coach would do. That allows suitable training to be set on days that are most convenient for you. Beginners running training programmes should take these factors into account. We pride ourselves on setting each person a running training schedule that that takes account of where they are at with their fitness and then moving them on to the next level.
Training schedules for running should always include variety. This stops you getting bored and also keeps stimulating your body in different ways so you get a better level of fitness. We make sure that from beginners through to top athletes the training schedules Sonia sets include variety to make exercise as much fun as possible. Being fit should always be fun. Beginners and experienced runners often forget this! Sonia would not have enjoyed an international career spanning three decades without running being fun!
