Elite coaching special - Craig Mottram and Andy Baddeley on racing
Baddeley was also in action in Sheffield, running a new PB for 1500m and beating Bernard Lagat and Rui Silva: “My expectations were probably higher than everyone else’s and I don’t think it could have gone any better. I was comfortable sitting behind Lagat and thought if I was there with 100m to go then I would win. I looked at him with 100m to go and he looked at me so I thought I’d got him. Then I just ran for home and ran straight through the line.” Baddeley believes that while he produced some good performances last year he could have run faster. But this year he believes he has moved his game on; partly due to linking up with Mottram for training and changing his mental attitude. “The training is not that different to what I was doing. But I have more belief and I’m a bit more aggressive in races. I’m not scared of the guys I’m racing against.” Baddeley’s technique remains the subject of some comments and banter, “We call him the hovercraft,” joked Mottram. But some have spotted it has changed slightly and this is a tell tale sign to some of the work Baddeley has been putting in: “I’m doing more conditioning – a little bit and often. I’m doing drills and have worked on elements of posture and core strength. It has changed slightly the way I run.” Addressing all aspects of fitness has helped to improve his performance. But as the pair well knows things sometimes don’t go quite to plan.
