Belief - the key to success say Craig Mottram and Andy Baddeley
Other athletes have had a positive influence on the careers of both Mottram and Andy Baddeley. Mottram did not follow the sport much as he was growing up, preferring to concentrate on his own sport. But now he is a Ron Clarke fan: “I like Ron Clarke. I now know about Ron Clarke and what he did for the sport and how in Mexico City he ran the 10K, came over the line, his heart stopped, they had to resuscitate him and he still lined up a few days later for the 5K. They were proper men back then!” The support and attitude of Clarke has made an impression on Mottram: “He’ll never boast about what he has done. He’ll send an email to Nic [Bideau] wishing me well and say send it on to Craig if you think he wants to hear it.” Another person who has had an influence on Mottram is a less well known basketball player: “My younger brother. He has achieved what he wanted to do. He started at the AIS and moved from home when he was 16. In his first inter-state game for AIS he injured his knee really badly. It took him three years to get back to playing another game of basketball. For six months he couldn’t walk. I remember him sat on the table learning how to straighten his leg again. “Now he plays for Italy. “I get motivation and inspiration from that. He still gets operations on his knee but he loves to play the game.”
