Belief - the key to success say Craig Mottram and Andy Baddeley
Page 1: Belief - the key to success say Mottram and Baddeley |
Next Page |
When any distance race hits the key stage the changes are your lungs will be screaming, your legs burning and at that point you will be having to take the key tactical decisions.
Day after day a distance runner will have to be following a carefully drawn up schedule. Not shying away from the hard work, not skipping the work they have less ability at, and not pushing too hard.
What makes the difference? What enables you to make the right decisions at the right time? What is the key to success?
Craig Mottram is a strong advocate of the importance of belief. It comes across every time he speaks about his sport. Andy Baddeley, Britain's best 1500m runner, has a different temperament. Less outspoken and less vocal and yet he also sees the vital importance of belief.
Craig Mottram - I'm going to get better When asked the main contributory factor in his success
Mottram, perhaps predictably, replied: “It’s probably
my belief in my own ability and belief that the people I work with have
in my ability.”
Mottram has a huge level of self belief when he lines
up for a race, but also in the effectiveness of his own training. He
continued: “That’s a big factor in helping me go out there and race. I
believe I can compete against the best in the world.”
After first coming over to Europe he lined up against Africans: “In the
first race I did over here I won it and someone asked me, ‘How can you
go out there into a race like that and against the Africans and win
it?’
“No-one had told me ‘You can’t win it’!
“When the gun goes it is a race and you try to win it. Africans have
been so dominant because all everyone hears about is they can’t be
beaten – don’t believe that crap. I believe in myself and the work I
have done and it has gone well so far.”
And Mottram is not at his peak yet: “It is going to
get better too!”
