Elite coaching special - Craig Mottram and Andy Baddeley on athlete lifestyle

Every runner has dreamt about accelerating away from a field of world class athletes and crossing the finish line in a blaze of flash photography. Anyone who heads out for a run once in a while wonders, ‘How fast could I go?’ For some the first experience is not a dream but reality. The second is not an occasional thought but an all consuming obsession as they seek to discover and push their own boundaries way beyond those of normal runners.
Two of these athletes are Craig Mottram and Andy Baddeley. Mottram is well known for his self belief and lively interviews. But first and foremost he is an athlete. He has a bronze medal from the last World Championships, has run well under 13min for 5K, clocked 8min 03.50sec for two miles and steadfastly refused, in word or action, to acknowledge any inherent superiority in African athletes.
Baddeley has progressed his own career steadily over recent seasons and after a disrupted athletics career while at university has emerged as one of Britain’s most exciting distance runners. He has set personal bests of 3min 34.74 for 1500m and 3min 51.95 for the mile this season. But he has also demonstrated the ability not only to run against the clock, but also to beat rivals in head-to-head races.
Recently the two sat down to a group of young British distance runners and spoke to them about what was involved in being an athlete. While the banter flows quick and fast between the two there was no doubting the dedication involved in what they do.
