Elite coaching special - Steve Cram on succeeding over 800m/1500m
Cram believes that the 800m race is one where athletes are going out
and making the biggest and most basic mistakes. Cram ran 1min 42sec for
the distance as well as winning the Commonwealth title at the distance.
But it is interesting to hear how he does not view himself as a great
at that event.
Steve says: "The 800m is one of the worst executed events in terms of
racing and training. Being a donkey 1500m runner [sic] helps as you
can't go off too fast. If you are training to run 1min 48sec then
running 50/1sec for the first lap is accepting you will be running a
lot slower on the second lap. Fifty-one seconds would be on for 1min 43
- that's one way of looking at it. People have got a negative view of
what is going to happen.”
Cram is not a big fan of seeing people go blazing off then folding in
the second lap. He says: "Rob Harrison was a 1min 45sec/3min 34sec
runner. He never made it to the big championships and did a lot of pace
making. We wouldn't line up and think 'I'm going to run 50sec' [for the
first lap].”
