Steer Clear Of Health Disasters

Page 1: Avoid disasters!

Next Page

NO-ONE would be caught up in a disaster if they could see it coming.

The problem is that whether through complacency, not knowing the warning signs or not seeing the signs we can find ourselves in more trouble than we’d have thought possible before we know what is happening.

This can be particularly true in the area of health and fitness. People seem to be sailing through life happily when suddenly, BAM!, they are hit by illness or injury or find themselves ‘inexplicably’ unable to manage what they had taken in their stride before. You may think you’re unlikely to suffer ‘injury’ but a bad back that stops you sitting comfortably at work or a dodgy ankle that plays up if you spend too long on your feet can stop you getting optimal exercise and stop you doing the simple things that you’d like on a day-to-day basis.

Of course, we all know that it won’t happen to us. That’s just the point. Everyone thinks that - until it does. You don’t buy insurance because you plan to have an accident you buy it because you realise it is a possibility. You need to take steps to insure your health getting wrecked!

Unlike driving a car, where accidents tend to happen in a split second, with your health problems are usually brewing long before they knock you off your feet. This means that they can take longer put right. But it also means that if you learn to spot the warning signs you stand a good chance of steering clear of them.

One theme you will notice throughout is the need to take a holistic approach to your fitness. This is not a radical concept it is a simple fact – you use the same body to work, exercise, eat, spend time with your family, clean the house and so on. You can not isolate any one of these areas from the others. They are all inter-connected; what goes on in one affects the others. Making changes to any area of your life can impact on others.

It may be helpful to think of your body’s energy or ability to do work as a bank account. You have a balance, you have a certain amount you can spend. You can invest some and spend some purely on recreation. If you invest enough in the right things your balance can actually grow so you can spend more on leisure. In other words if you get fitter you have more energy and can do more.

But if you spend without thinking you can end up overdrawn: if you overdo it you become ill or injured.

Or you can spend so much from your account that when an unexpected expenditure becomes necessary you haven’t got the resources to deal with it. You are ‘flying close to the wind’ so if something unexpected makes a demand on your body you are not equipped to cope with it. This may be a flu bug you can’t fight off or an increase in work load that leads to you feeling wiped out.

Read on to ensure you avoid the disasters that are lying in wait to catch YOU out.
