Buying for better health

Page 4: The key kit

On top of shoes and appropriate clothing there are other items that are a very wise investment for getting fit.

Buy a couple of towels for the gym. A small sweat towel to wipe any sweat off equipment after you have used it, and beforehand if the person before has not been so considerate. Then have a separate sports towel for showering afterwards – you don’t want to be using the same thing you’ve been wiping sweat with! Get a decent kit bag with compartments plus may be a gym sack so you can keep clean kit/clothes separate to you used kit, your towel and your shoes.

A water bottle will help keep you hydrated. You can just keep refilling a mineral water bottle from the water machine or tap. The bottle will encourage you to drink, therefore to stay hydrated and make you better able to exercise. It will also help you keep a track on how much you have drunk.

In the summer invest in sun cream. It is surprising how many people will put on cream for heading outdoors in normal circumstances but neglect it when exercising. You should look for a cream that will still allow your skin to breathe but that is not going to easily come off if you’re sweating. There are products out there designed for this.

One thing it is worth female runners buying, although everyone hopes you never use it, is a rape alarm. It will increase your peace of mind. But still maintain awareness of your environment and choice of route when running. These types of considerations may have an impact on what kit you choose to buy to run in too, as sadly some people’s reaction to some choices of sports clothing is at best Neanderthal and can become intimidating or worse.

Depending on what exercise you are doing outdoors it may be worth taking a mobile phone with you. Have a pocket to put it in rather than carrying it on show in your hand. If it could be wet weather put it in a good old sandwich bag to stop it getting water in it.

It is not just kit that you use when training that can have an impact on how you feel and look when you train and how healthy you are. Good nutrition and hydration are both very important to being healthy and feeling good when it comes to time to exercise.

There is little point in spending money on gym membership if your fridge looks like a rejects bin for everything Jamie Oliver chucked out of the school dinners. Make sure you spend on healthy food. It need not be more expensive. If you don’t buy the things you eat when you shouldn’t they won’t be there for you to be tempted. Buy ‘treats’ in quantities you’ll have no reason to feel guilty about eating. Buy a good fruit bowl for home (and even for your desk at work) and keep it stocked.

Use of other products you already have in your life can help you get fitter.

You will always put your business meetings etc into your diary or Blackberry to be sure you don’t miss them. Use the same principle with your training. Write it in there, and therefore into your head, as an appointment not to be missed or forgotten. Work out how often you need to change your training shoes and put in your diary when this will be as the change in their condition will be gradual and you may not notice it until you start getting aches. Running shoes last roughly 400 to 500 miles of running, using them for other activities will reduce this so work out how much wear you get a week and get the replacement date in your diary. Eg if in a week you run 20 miles and do a class (count that, say, as five miles) you do the equivalent of 100 miles a month and your shoes should be changed after four months.

As already mentioned a fruit bowl in the right place can help you eat the right kind of snack. And it may be a bottle of mineral water (even if you just refill it from the water machine) on your desk will help you to make sure you stay hydrated. Green tea is a healthy drink, you may want to buy a bag of tea bags for home or work to help you drink more healthily.

Spending wisely and being properly equipped will help you to make sure you are fit and healthy and in good habits.

People often find it a struggle to keep fit and healthy as they are ill-equipped. Their kit bag, home or office is lacking the equipment to help them get into good habits or even actively conspires against them.

Be sure you give yourself every chance of a healthy life.
