Find the right gym for you

Page 1: The right choice of gym

If you are looking to join a gym a careful choice is needed.

The right gym will motivate you to exercise and provide all the facilities you need. It will fit with your personality and fitness goals.

The wrong choice will mean that you will not want to go, may be put off the idea of exercising, and will prove an expensive waste of hard earned cash!

Make sure you visit the gym. Try to visit several to get a feel for what is on offer, and go at the time you will exercise at so that you see what the atmosphere, staffing levels etc will be like should you join. Then have a good look around and consider these issues:

Location: How easy is it to get to? Convenience is critical. Consider whether you will usually be travelling from work or home.
Staff: Are they friendly and happy to help? Are they willing to listen to you? Are they too pushy? What qualifications and expertise do they have? For example if you want to improve your running do they have someone with expertise on this or are they going to put you on their Arnold Schwarzenegger system anyway. If you want a personal trainer what are the rates?
Timetable: This includes the opening hours but also class times. Make sure the gym is open when you want it to be and the classes you want fit your schedule . Ask about class bookings – are they needed and how far in advance?
Clients: Do these look like your type of people? Will you be comfortable around them?
Atmosphere: This ties with the last point but there’s more. Is the music too loud? Is it too crowded? Is it too quiet? Do areas such as a bar/café fit your expectations?
Friends: Where do your friends go? You are more likely to exercise if you have someone to go with.
Cleanliness: Are the machines always wiped down after use? What do the changing rooms look like?
Facilities: Does it have the equipment you want? Will you have to wait for equipment? Does it look well maintained? Do you want a pool? What about a bar/café?
Fees: Is there a ‘joining fee’? What are the rates? Are there any offers?

You can see our Gym Finder to help you choose a gym that offers exactly what you want for your fitness training.
