Stay Motivated
Your goals are likely to be about what you are going to achieve.
That does not mean you shouldn’t look to others. Other people can be a huge motivating factor and can provide that added dimension when other reasons to do what you should are starting to fail.
Former London Marathon champion Ingrid Kristiansen had to run hour after hour indoors on a treadmill through the Norwegian winter. So she put pictures of her rivals around her treadmill to keep her focussed! It wasn’t that she disliked them, it was that seeing them reminded her of what they were likely to be doing and the work she needed to do to be able to beat them.
Other people have told of how they thought they could never achieve a given goal until they heard of someone else doing so. ‘If they can do it so can I!’ is a great motivator, as is ‘I’m not going to fail where they have succeeded!’. You do not even have to be looking to the same goal. Cyclist Lance Armstrong who came back from cancer to win an unprecedented seven Tour De France titles has inspired many people. None of them have won seven ‘Tours’ but they have all benefited from seeing someone else’s success against the odds, ‘If he can do that then I can…’ Let other people help you to aspire to success and see it as achievable. Your ‘hero’ may be a sporting superstar or a friend who has lost weight despite a sceptical family. Look for inspiration everywhere.
The chances are that someone will tell you that you can’t succeed in your goal. Keep them in mind. Don’t let them ‘win’. Look to those who inspire you for reassurance you can succeed. And when the going gets tough think of the doubters and tell yourself ‘I’ll show them!’.
Sometimes it is those close to you who will motivate you the most. The desire to set a healthy example for your children, to not let down the people sponsoring you for the run, or to see the pride on your families faces once you have succeeded can all drive you on.
