Stay Motivated
Sometimes it is best to dwell on the positives to give a desire for success. ‘A morning snack of a banana rather than crisps will make me feel better and look healthier.’ The benefits of action can be a powerful motivation. Try to be specific about what the benefits are. ‘I’ll be able to beat my best time for 5K’ is better than ‘I’ll run better’.
On other occasions it can be the potential negative that spurs us to do the right thing. ‘I don’t want to put on the weight I’ve lost.’ Or ‘I don’t want to be the slower than Dave in accounts when we all do the charity 5K’.
Of course a combination of the two can be very effective and usually gives the full picture. ‘If I do my three runs this week I’ll get in better shape, if I don’t I’ll start to put on weight again.’
The key is to be realistic with the motivating factor and to be honest. If you are ill telling yourself going for a run will boost your health is a lie! The best thing to do is rest up. You need to tell yourself ‘Some fruit, fluids and an early night will make me feel better, going for a run will do me harm.’
Honesty is crucial. You will quickly lose motivation if you give yourself unrealistic or untrue ‘self-talk’.
