Treadmill Training
There is one debate that often takes place between different runners – to treadmill train or a big 'No!' to treadmill training.
Some people who run would never touch one, other than with a sledgehammer, others do all their training on the rolling road.
A treadmill is a great piece of gym equipment. Gimmicks come and go but those pieces of equipment based on the simplest principles – run, cycle or lift something heavy, are the ones that have stood the test of time and that always are the most extensively used in any gym.
Treadmills are not new. Before the 1968 Olympics were held in the altitude thinned air of Mexico the East Europeans built big treadmills that could take a group of runners. They put them in rooms where they could artificially lower the amount of oxygen to prepare their athletes for the Mexico games.
The image of muscular women called Helga and Olga pounding their way through a session on a treadmill in a warehouse near Somewhere-grad while watched by a tyrannical bloke called Vladimir is a far cry from today’s normal treadmill usage. While the use has gone mainstream some of the treadmills in a gym today now have more technology, read outs and controls than most of the Sputnik spacecraft.
But the principle remains the same: you run indoors on a rolling piece of material without moving more than a few inches all session.
