The Reasons For Running
Running can make you fitter and happier. Do you really need to know any more than that? Okay, let us explain the details. The truth is that there are thousands of great reasons to run. Ask the children seeing who can get to the other side of the playground first, the businessman de-stressing, or the woman losing weight while chatting to her friend. They all have different answers, and more than one reason. Running is incredibly accessible, left-right and repeat as necessary, it is cheap and one of the most natural and effective ways of getting fitter and healthier you can know. There are few limits to where you run, you don’t need a team, partner or opponent and most people already have all the basic equipment needed. Running can bring great enjoyment as well as doing you good. Running releases chemicals called endorphins, giving them a natural buzz that lasts after they have finished exercising and means they are keen to go out again. For sure, there are people out there with 101 myths on why not to run – as they shake their head and many chins at you and gasp for breath the anti-exercise will tell you how you’re hurting your bones (weight bearing exercise can strengthen them), breathing in muck (running strengthens your heart and lungs) and is only for the super skinny who seem to be fans of bun hugging shorts (running is for everyone). Don’t listen to a word, don’t waste your breath arguing with these people. Idiots always win the argument – they drag you down to their level and beat you with experience. They are in the same boat as those people who use the full depth of their wit to shout after you ‘Run, Forrest Run’ or sing for you to ‘Keep on running’ as you float on past wondering why dog walkers never get the same kind of abuse. They both wonder why you bother and why you don’t pay the least bit of notice to their ‘wise’ words. That’s because they don’t understand. They don't understand how running sorts your mind out. Two miles into a run the pedantic boss, argumentative kids and uncooperative computer seem light years behind you. You also know that you are getting fitter, and, hey, aren’t you moving faster than ever with less effort? That’s right. You’re leaner, healthier, less stressed and, let’s face it, faster than you have been before. The fat starts to disappear, muscle tone improves. Each breath draws in more oxygen. Statistics show that runners have fewer cardiovascular problems due to their healthier lifestyles. Stairs are there to be run up with no huffing and puffing and you almost get bored if you have to stand still in a lift. You get fitter, more relaxed and more able to cope with whatever any day throws at you. On foot you’ll see places you never knew existed with no travel agents needed – just go out and buy a pair of running shoes!
