Choosing your kit wisely - Women's fitness clothing and running kit
Page 1: Choosing your kit wisely - Women's fitness clothing and running kit |
|
Exercise should be fun and rewarding as well as bring great health and fitness benefits. Whether you are exercising at the gym or heading out the door for a run the correct training kit is vitally important. If you are looking to keep exercise fun and enjoyable the last thing you want is discomfort or even a sports injury hindering you. You want training kit that looks and feels great and allows you to exercise in comfort with as little risk of injury as possible. If you are serious about performance then better comfort and performance from your kit will allow you to train harder, more effectively and with less distractions from what you are trying to achieve in your session.
Now is a great time to be buying women's kit for the gym and running. The big sports brands have all taken on board the need for clothing to be stylish as well as functional. And women's gym kit is an essential part of their business - it's not just a case of making men's clothes or shoes in a smaller size and different colour. Women's kit Women's kit is a completely different market and area of business!
Tops One of the most important items in your kitbag will be a sports bra. Some training crop tops or vest tops will have built in support. Conversely many sports bras also double up for use as a crop top. A sports bra needs to fit well so it controls movement but doesn't feel restrictive. It may be an encapsulation bra or a compression bra. An encapsulation sports bra has moulded cups for firm support. A compression type flattens the breasts against the body. Sports bras for a larger bust often use encapsulation. You may have a personal preference for one type or the other but the key is to make sure you get the support you need which will ensure comfort and protection from stretching of ligaments. The fabric should be breathable and watch for any stitching or seams that could cause rubbing.
Once you have your bra you are then able to choose your top. As mentioned you may choose a vest top or crop top which has a lining for (added) support. You may prefer a T-shirt or sleeveless T-shirt. Whichever type of top you choose for the gym or running it should have certain characteristics. It should be breathable and wick perspiration away from the body. This will stop you from getting too warm, it will prevent the accumulating perspiration making your clothes heavier, it will reduce the risk of chaffing, and it will prevent you feeling a chill should the temperature drop. The top should fit well to allow you the range of movement you need to do the exercise you are planning on taking part in. This is where a vest top or crop top can have an advantage over a sports T-shirt as they allow more freedom of movement. You should also make sure that there are no hems or seems in a position that is likely to rub.
For exercising outside in colder weather you may want a running jacket and/or long sleeved top. As well as being weatherproof a running jacket should still be breathable and as you 'layer up' you need to make sure all the layers are breathable otherwise the perspiration will escape so far and then get trapped.
Remember a standard fashion top or cotton T-shirt will not have these properties and so will make your exercise harder and less enjoyable.
Shorts/leggings Once your top half is dealt with it is on to your bottom half. Again there are a variety of options you can wear. Many women like tights which can come in long, three-quarter tights (also called capri tights) which come to just below the knee, or short tights. Dark colours can be complimentary and long tights can give good warmth if you are heading for a run outside. But you can also choose to wear shorts including 'baggy shorts' which are longer and looser than conventional sports shorts. Other people, particularly those doing classes such as yoga or Pilates may choose workout pants which are full length looser fitting trousers. As with your tops whatever you choose you should look for something with good breathability and without anything that is likely to rub. Good freedom of movement is important too. The material the clothing is made of and how it is cut/panelled will have an impact on this. Many workout pants are now made of a more elastic or stretchy material to allow them to adapt better to your movement. Beware of jogging bottom style fashion wear that may look the part but not be made of the technical fabrics that will keep you at the right temperature and give you the freedom of movement you will want to exercise effectively.
Socks Your socks may sound the least exciting piece of your kit. But they are important. 'Excitement'caused by blisters, overheating feet, rubbing, soreness, or irritated skin is not the kinds of excitement we want when training! This means that it is well worth buying a pair of sports socks which will stay in place, not bunch, help prevent rubbing and keep your feet cool and dry. There is little point in wearing a pair of awesome shoes only to have your feet shredded by socks which turn to sandpaper once called upon for use in exercise.
