Elite coaching special - Craig Mottram and Andy Baddeley on racing
Now Mottram and Baddeley have more races lined up as their goals. For Baddeley the big goals are the Olympics in 2008 and 2012. “It is always in the back of your mind. But it is a long way off and I don’t want to obsess about one race as it is still a long way off. You need stepping stones to take you to your long term goal.” Before then becomes the World Championships. Mottram said: “The World Championships is in five weeks from now. It has been my long term goal. That’s the nearest thing. Then the Olympics is another long term goal.” Mottram’s aim is clear: “I want to win. “In 2004 I was in a similar situation to Baddeley is now. I ran the Crystal Palace Grand Prix and ran under 13min for the first time. Then the Olympics became a really big proposition. It was only three or four weeks away and I went from thinking I would make the final to thinking I would definitely make the final but then what can I do in the final? "Baddeley here, he’ll make the final. Once he’s in the final? He’s pretty quick. Anything can happen. “If I was him I’d be going in confident I would make the final and would put that presence there – make everyone else know I expected to be in the final. There will be 15 guys who can run 3min 31sec/32sec, four guys who believe they will get a medal – the rest will think ‘I will run around and look alright.’” With the fast talking, wise cracking Aussie in full stream Baddeley sits quietly keeping his own council. He’s aware the media attention around Mottram and his way of addressing it is quite different: “I get to keep these things to myself,” he laughs.
