Elite coaching special - Craig Mottram and Andy Baddeley on athlete lifestyle

Mottram outlined his usual routine, “I get up at about 7.45am and have a bit of breakfast, a cup of coffee and a piece of toast before I go to work.”
Yes, he actually called it work, before pausing. “Work or training...I go to training at 9.30am. On Monday, Wednesday and Friday I do a 60min to 70min run in the morning and then train again in the afternoon. At 5.30pm I run for about 35min, do some gym and strides.”
The strides involve three 150m runs with acceleration off the bend. He said: “They’re at 90% to 95%, fast but relaxed. I’m running up to 110 miles a week and you can lose that ability to run fast. In training we don’t often run faster than 60sec laps. It reminds your body of how to run fast.
“Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday are session days. On Tuesdays I am on the track, on Saturday it is hills or a pace run. It is not rocket science. There is nothing special about it. There is a lot of rest in between and I eat well. I don’t mean lots, but good quality foods.”

It is a routine that clearly gets the job done. But there is a break, and that is when it shows that it is not just necessity or routine which gets Mottram out the door.
He explained he has some time off at the end of the season but can’t stay out of his running shoes for too long: “I have four weeks at home when I go back and rest and run as much or as little as I want to. I run because I love to run. I go off on holiday with my mates and get up and go for a run first thing in the morning.”

For Baddeley the routine is very similar. Baddeley is coached by Andy Hobdell and Mottram by Nic Bideau but the athletes and coaches work together on many sessions and on training trips. Baddeley has had to progress to his current level of training: “It has taken me a while to build up. I didn’t used to run twice a day. I don’t view it as a sacrifice; it is what you need to do to succeed.”
