Elite coaching special - Steve Cram on succeeding over 800m/1500m
Cram is a great believer in knuckling down and getting on with the training. He’s not convinced that the ‘kid gloves’ approach works. He believes athletes in their late teens need to step up and get serious about their running if they are serious about wanting to succeed.
"There are lots of studies I could show you about what people are doing at 19 or 20. People don't just develop at that age.
"There comes a point where you have to either say I am going for this or I am not. You can't just keep saying next year...next year..."
Cram himself is a case in point: "At 22 I won the World Championships. I thought I'd better get on with it. I could have had the excuse from the Olympics [1980] onwards that my time would come later when Ovett and Coe got older. But other people come by. They are always going to come. You don't wait for your turn - other people are coming past.”
Cram knew when the time was to put in the spade work that would lead to the success: "It's a case of in the winter you go out and train hard. Then you do the high intensity track work in the summer. Then you go out and race.”
As Nic Bideau has said in an interview on www.sports-fitness.com one thing that is essential is to learn the fundamentals of racing. Cram says he did this at an early age: “As a kid I ran pretty much each weekend. As I got better I got a bit more scientific and picked and chose more. But that comes later.
"When I came to doing the Commonwealth Games at 18 or 19 [in fact he was just 17 at the 1978 games] I knew how to race. If you haven't got experience in races on the track or cross-country you can't draw on it. You can only learn it by doing the races.”
