Beat the winter blues
People talk about something called your ‘body clock’. This may sound a bit of an old wives’ tale but in fact is completely scientific.
The scientific term for the variations in how you feel through the day is ‘Circadian Rhythms’. These have an effect on both body and mind. One of the big factors affecting the part of your brain that controls your Circadian Rhythms is light. The optic nerve from your eye runs to the part of your brain controlling the body clock. This, among other things, affects the release of the hormone melatonin which is the sleep hormone. Melatonin is released more when it is dark to make you feel sleepier.
Your Circadian Rhythms affect how ready your body is to exercise, your concentration levels, and your appetite.
In normal circumstances your body is best prepared to train in the early evening, making after work an ideal time to train. Your body is warmer, your concentration levels are likely to be at their best and, having had two meals, you should be properly fuelled for action! If you wait until later in the evening you are likely to start feeling more tired.
In the winter darkness comes earlier and so you are likely to begin feeling drowsy earlier in the evening. However if you stick to your routine your body should adapt and you will feel ready to train at this time. You may even find that as you start exercising or warming up it is like a switch has been flicked and your body goes into ‘exercise mode’ again.
