Page 5: Cash in on your energy 2 - What do you spend?

To see how you are doing with keeping your life in balance let's first of all let’s start with your ‘outgoings’. What do you spend your time and energy doing?

Take a piece of paper and list everything. Think through a typical week writing it all down. Then think of those extras that crop up often enough to be worth mentioning. What is on that list? A financial advisor would tell you to start getting rid of any unnecessary items of expenditure. We can do the same. Going to the pub after working late can mean you eat junk, drink unnecessary alcohol, get home late and sleep badly. All this after a long day! Is that a good use of time and energy? If you want time with colleagues go for a coffee at lunchtime. You’ll even be fresher and more up for talking then than after a long day.

Look at who and what you spend your time and energy on. This should be a good reflection of your priorities. Ask yourself about ‘high-maintenance’ friends or time spent trying to impress the boss. Is it worth the effort you put in? You may need to be more ruthless and instead spend more time on people you’d rather be with. One person may want to see you three times a week or they feel your friendship is on the rocks but is that a fair appraisal?

You should now have an idea of where you can save energy and where you are going to look to spend more time. Start committing some of these to your diary or organiser so you stick to them.

Having said you should look at ‘income and expenditure’ of energy there are times this is not so simple. Some activities have a mixed role in terms of what they do. A night out with your friends can be a great way to unwind but can also be physically tiring – depending on what you do. This is another reason why looking at your list of what you spend your time on can be useful. You may realise that you need to spend more time with your friends to de stress or it may be that you spot that there are too many late nights in there and that you need to look to shift how and when you do your socialising to save energy.

Exercise is a more extreme case of where something involves ‘income and expenditure’ of energy. Exercise is tiring and involves expending energy. But it leads to you being fitter and healthier so you have higher overall energy levels. It also has the benefit of strengthening your body to be able to take more demands in day-to-day life. For example if you are active and have a strong core/body you are less likely to suffer with a bad back. However if you do too much exercise with too little recovery instead of it boosting your energy levels it can lead to you becoming more tired and prone to illness and injury. So you need to be sure that after exercise you are able to recover in time for your next session and that you are not left too tired to be able to do the other things that play an important part of your life.

Spend your energy wisely to get the most out of it.
